When it comes to entryways, energy efficiency is all about the door materials, glass and components, and how they work together.

ENERGY STAR is a government program that helps consumers save money on energy costs and protect the environment through superior energy efficiency. As part of our commitment to offering quality products that excel at helping your home save energy, we proactively adopt standards that meet or exceed ENERGY STAR criteria.

Our doors are qualified to help keep heating and cooling sealed inside your home. More than 85% of Therma-Tru door and glass options are ENERGY STAR qualified and National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) certified. That means energy savings straight into your pocket.

Some of the features that help Therma-Tru doors earn their ENERGY STAR qualified ratings include:

  • A polyurethane foam core: Therma-Tru fiberglass doors have a solid polyurethane foam core which is among the most energy-efficient door materials available today.

  • Energy-efficient glass: Most Therma-Tru decorative, as well as privacy and textured, glass is triple-pane for reduced heat flow. Factory-coated Low-E glass options deliver exceptional energy efficiency.

  • Complete door systems: Therma-Tru doors and glass are engineered to work together with components like weatherstrip that help create a tighter seal and reduce air leakage around the edges.

ENERGY STAR FAQs

What is ENERGY STAR?

ENERGY STAR is a voluntary program that was created by the EPA and is administered by the EPA and U.S. Department of Energy. Its goal is to help reduce the energy consumption and help consumers protect the environment. By being ENERGY STAR qualified, your Therma-Tru door is held to one of the highest standards in the country for energy efficiency.

What are the ENERGY STAR criteria?

To be labeled as an ENERGY STAR qualified product, the NFRC ratings (U-Factor and SHGC or Solar Heat Gain Coefficient) ratings must meet the ENERGY STAR Eligibility Criteria for residential doors:

Glazing LevelU-Factor1SHGC2
Opaque ≤ 0.17 No Rating
≤ ½-lite ≤ 0.23 ≤ 0.23
> ½-lite ≤ 0.28 Northern
North-Central
≤ 0.40
Southern
South-Central
≤ 0.23
  • Air Leakage for Sliding Doors ≤ 0.3 cfm/ft²
  • Air Leakage for Swinging Doors ≤ 0.5 cfm/ft²
  1. Btu/h ft² °F
  2. Solar Heat Gain Coefficient

Under the above criteria, it may also depend on where you live. For doors with larger glass, the U-Value and the Solar Heat Gain Coefficient needed to qualify change depending on whether you live in the Northern or Southern part of the country. See the ENERGY STAR Climate Zone Finder to find your climate zone.

Which Therma-Tru products qualify?

Because of their design and construction, more than 85% of Therma-Tru door and glass options qualify for the ENERGY STAR program. There are thousands of choices for entry and patio. See the ENERGY STAR Qualification Charts below to find qualified products.

What are U-Factor and SHGC?

A U-Value (also known as U-Factor) measures how much heat or cold passes through the window or the door. It basically tells you how well a door or window insulates the home. The Solar Heat Gain Coefficient tells you how much heat from the sun is able to pass through the glass of the door or window.
