What are the advantages of fiberglass over wood and steel?

A Therma-Tru fiberglass door looks like wood. But it won’t warp or rot like wood, or dent or rust like steel. And the inside is filled with an exceptional heat- and cold-resistant material that helps keep your home warm in winter and cool in summer.

Is Therma-Tru in compliance with the new California Proposition 65 Legislation?

Installation & Modification

How do I install a Therma-Tru entry or patio door system?

Can I cut the height of my door?

No. We do not recommend making on-site modifications.

Can I have a storm door?

Yes. However, Therma-Tru is not responsible for any failure of, or any damage caused to, the storm door or any damage caused to your Therma-Tru door as a result of the storm door.

Can I hang a window treatment, such as blinds or curtains, or add a door knocker on my door?

No. We do not recommend drilling into the door. However, if you choose to use an exterior window treatment or a door knocker, you will need to attach the window treatment or door knocker with a pass-through bolt and a finish ring or washer.  As an alternative, Therma-Tru offers internal blind options.  Check with your local Therma-Tru dealer for product availability.

Can a Therma-Tru door be modified by adding a pet door, mail slot, kickplate or peepsite?

No, we do not recommend drilling into the door.  However, if you choose to use an option listed above, follow the manufacturer’s instructions found on the product along with these tips to help protect the integrity of the door:

  • For a peepsite, pet door, or a mail slot – Use a product that contains an inner sleeve. 
  • For a kickplate – To protect the integrity of the door, fill any pre-drilled holes with sealant prior to application. 

Finishing and Finish Maintenance

Many of the questions below, and many more, are answered on our website and in our Finishing Instructions.

Is the outdoor temperature important while staining?

Yes, the temperature is extremely important or else the stain will flake, fade, and have a milky look. Temperature should be between 50 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit and the humidity should be below 80%.

What if the weather is not accommodating to finish the unit, how do I protect the jambs and door?

You can prime or clear topcoat all unfinished wood components within 2 weeks until your weather is more accommodating.

Do I sand the door before staining or before applying a second coat of topcoat?

No, this is not recommended or necessary for the topcoat to adhere.

What is the 'white powder' that has appeared on my door stained with a Therma-Tru finishing kit?

We see this when stain has been applied very heavily (usually to achieve a dark color). There are UV inhibitors in the stain, which will migrate through the topcoat when there is a lot of stain on the door. Wash it off with detergent and water. It may come back one or two more times, but will eventually cease. To prevent in the future, use less stain. Most doors do not require heavy stain coats to achieve dark colors. Reducing the UV inhibitor in the stain will begin reducing the durability of the finishing system.

How do I finish my Smooth Star door?

Priming the Smooth Star door is not necessary.  Smooth-Star doors are "paint-grade plus" and should only be painted.  After cleaning, paint the door using a high quality exterior grade acrylic latex paint.  Be watchful of paints with major ingredients like "vinyl polymers" or "polyvinyl acetate" or that are labeled "interior/exterior" in many cases they do not adhere well to Smooth-Star. 

Can I order prefinished doors?

Yes. Ask your dealer for more information on the prefinished styles that are available through their distributors.

How do I obtain stain?

Stain can be bought through your local Therma-Tru dealer, by calling 1-877-99-STAIN, or online by placing an order on our website.

Do I have to take the door off its hinges before finishing?

No. The weatherstripping can be pulled out of the jambs, so it can be closed and locked during the drying period. Weatherstripping can be pushed back into the jambs after topcoat has dried.

How much will one kit do?

One kit will handle a single door unit with sidelites, a double door unit or an 8' door unit, inside and out.

What does the Therma-Tru stain kit include?

Our stain kit includes everything you need to finish the inside and outside of a complete double door unit, an 8’ door unit, or a single door with two sidelites.  It contains stain, topcoat, several brushes, rags, gloves, mineral spirits, stir sticks and two skin samples.

What do I use to clean the door with?

Using a clean, dry rag, clean the entire surface with either the provided mineral spirits or an all-purpose cleaner such as Top Job, Mr. Clean or Pine Sol. Rinse soap off thoroughly. Allow to dry completely.

Which Therma-Tru doors can be stained?

Classic-Craft and Fiber-Classic doors.

What stain should be used on Therma-Tru Classic-Craft or Fiber-Classic fiberglass doors?

We recommend the Therma-Tru stain kit.  However if you wish to use a different kit, we recommend an oil based stain with a water based top coat.  Be sure to finish all exposed sides, edges and ends of the door.

Do I have to prime Classic-Craft or Fiber-Classic doors before staining?

Priming is not necessary or recommended unless you are painting your door. For best adhesion, we recommend priming the door with an alkyd-based or acrylic-based primer before painting.  The doors can be primed and painted with an exterior grade high quality acrylic latex paint.  Be sure to finish all exposed sides, edges and ends of the door.

My wood jambs are clear and I want to stain them. Do I do anything different?

You could purchase a can of wood sealer or wood conditioner and apply it to the jambs to limit the penetration of the stain. The stain is a heavily pigmented stain and could stain the jambs darker if you do not apply a sealer or use the mineral spirits first.

Can I mix stain colors?

Yes, as long as you are mixing Therma-Tru stain with Therma-Tru stain. The stain can be tinted with any "universal" tint to achieve a certain color.

How can I get a high-gloss finish?

Apply 3-5 coats of the Therma-Tru topcoat to achieve a high-gloss finish. Let each layer dry 4 hours before applying the next layer.

What paint should I use on the Classic-Craft or Fiber-Classic door?

These doors should be primed and painted with a high quality acrylic, alkyd or oil-based exterior house paint. Primer and paint should be produced by the same manufacturer and be made to work together.

Can I stain my Smooth-Star door?

No, Smooth-Star doors are "paint-grade plus" and can only be painted. After cleaning, paint with a high quality exterior grade latex or acrylic house paint.

Do I have to prime my Smooth-Star door?

No, it is not necessary to prime the door, but if your door has a doorlite in it, then the molding around the glass should be primed with an acrylic or alkyd primer. Wipe the frame with a clean cloth first, then prime and paint.

How do I repair nicks and scratches or scuffs in the stained finish on my door?

Clean area first with mineral spirits or an all-purpose cleaner. Then, use a small artist brush or cotton swab to apply stain to the nicks or scratches. Carefully wipe or brush off excess stain, let dry and then apply a thin coat of the topcoat over the repaired area. Refer to the finishing instructions under "Repairs". Also, there are a variety of “touch-up markers” or repair pencils that repair scratches or nicks in finishes on fine wood furniture. These do a nice job too.

How do I strip a fiberglass door to restain/repaint it?

To strip our fiberglass doors of paints, stains or topcoats, use a methylene chloride-based stripper. We recommend Savogran® SuperStrip®, Savogran® Kutzit®, or Dad’s Easy Spray® Paint, Stain & Varnish Remover.  Do not leave stripper on the door any longer than 2-3 minutes. You may use a nylon bristle brush to remove any stubborn residue. Wipe the door clean then thoroughly wash the door with a mild soap and water.  Make sure the door is completely dry before refinishing.

The stripper says to not use it on fiberglass. Can I use it?

Fiberglass doors manufactured by Therma-Tru are made from a fiberglass material that you can safely use the recommended strippers on. Follow our finishing instructions for stripping.

Can I shut my door if the stain is still wet?

The weather-stripping can be pulled out of the jambs, so it can be closed and locked during the drying period. Weather-stripping can be pushed back into the jambs after topcoat has dried and cured.

How do I remove any excess glazing from around the lite frame?

I feel I have a warranty claim. Who should I contact?

To initiate a possible warranty claim, contact the dealer, builder or contractor who installed or sold the product. If that party is unknown or unreachable, call us toll-free at 1-800-THERMA-TRU (843-7628), Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–6 p.m., or email us at customersupport@thermatru.com.

How can I tell if I have a Therma-Tru door system?

The “Therma-Tru” name stamp is typically on many of the components, including hinges, multi-point locking system and weatherstrip, and a watermark is on the glass and select glass frames.

Is the Therma-Tru warranty transferable?

No. The Therma-Tru limited warranty applies only to the original purchaser or first owner of the home.

I purchased my home from a builder. It was vacant for a year and never occupied. Do I still have a warranty?

Yes. As long as you were the first to dwell in the home, you are considered the original homeowner.

I purchased a Therma-Tru door system to install in my newly built home, but I do not have a receipt that shows proof of purchase. Do I still have a warranty?

Yes, if you are the original homeowner of a newly constructed home. Should a warranty claim be filed, we will ask for a copy of the deed to your home, purchase agreement or owner occupancy paperwork to serve as proof of purchase.

What is a Letter of Occupancy or Certificate of Occupancy?

This applies only to newly constructed residences, and is a document issued by a local government agency or building department certifying a building's compliance with applicable building codes and other laws, and indicating it to be in a condition suitable for occupancy.

If the property is commercial, will I qualify for the residential warranty?

No. For clarification, see our Residential Limited Warranty.

Will Therma-Tru install or reimburse my labor costs to have replacement product(s) or component(s) installed if I have a qualifying warranty claim?

No. Therma-Tru’s limited warranty excludes labor costs, including costs related to installation of replacement products.

If I do not finish the door, will I void the warranty?

Yes. For continued warranty coverage, all fiberglass Therma-Tru door systems must be finished within 6 months of installation.  However, all bare or unprotected wood surfaces, such as door frames, should be primed and painted, or stained and top coated within the lesser of 2 weeks of installation or exposure to weather.   

Will I void the warranty if I put in a storm door?

The use of a properly installed and properly vented storm door with a Therma-Tru door system will not void the door system’s limited lifetime warranty. However, Therma-Tru is not responsible for any failure of, or any damage caused to, the storm door or any damage caused to your Therma-Tru door as a result of the storm door.

Will I void the warranty if I put in a peep sight, mail slot, or pet door?

Therma-Tru door systems are warrantied against manufacturing defects. If you are installing a peep sight, mail slot or pet door, it must have a water-resistant inner sleeve to protect the core of the door. Refer to the peep sight, mail slot or ped door manufacturer’s instructions.

Glass Limited Warranty

I hit my door with a rock while mowing and broke the glass. Is this covered under warranty?

Therma-Tru glass in a Therma-Tru door system is warrantied against any manufacturing defects, not damage that has been done to the door.

I have broken glass in my door from a break-in. Is it covered?

No. However, you can contact your local Therma-Tru dealer for replacement product availability.

What is the warranty on the internal blinds in my door?

For complete information on the limited warranty, visit our warranties page or contact your dealer, builder or contractor who installed or sold the product.

Can I change out the glass in my door or sidelite without voiding the warranty?

To maintain your limited lifetime warranty, the replacement glass must be offered in the same door line as your Therma-Tru door system. For example, you may only use Classic-Craft glass in a Classic-Craft door.  In addition, to maintain your limited lifetime warranty, replace the glass per the Therma-Tru instructions.  For written instructions, see Doorlite Glass and Frame Replacement in the Repair and Replacement section of our Site Manual on the Technical Manuals page. Does a new warranty term start when I receive replacement glass pursuant to the limited warranty?

No. The original term that applied to the original glass insert continues to apply to any replacement glass insert.

Components Limited Warranty

Are my door bottom sweep and weatherstrip covered under warranty?

The door bottom sweep and weatherstrip are warrantied against manufacturing defects, excluding normal wear and tear.

What is the warranty on the multi-point locking system (MPLS)?

The MPLS is covered by Therma-Tru’s limited warranty for the same duration as the limited warranty on the door system and covers the mechanical and locking mechanisms only when it is part of a fiberglass door system, and excludes installations within five (5) miles of a body of salt water.

Are my hinges covered if they rust?

No. The hinge finish is not warrantied. Furthermore, the mechanical mechanism on hinges is excluded from the limited warranty if the installation is within five (5) miles of a body of salt water.

My jambs are rotting. I am the original homeowner. Is this covered under the warranty?

Wood deterioration or other adverse condition attributed to, or arising from, a frame system is not covered under the Therma-Tru limited warranty unless the frame system is a genuine Therma-Tru rot-resistant component part.

What is the warranty on my factory applied finish?

Therma-Tru does not offer a factory finished door system and therefore does not warranty the finish. If you purchased a pre-finished door system, contact your dealer or distributor for information about the warranty they may have provided.

Building Codes

Do all local jurisdictions have the same building codes?

No. To learn what the local building code requirements are where you live, you need to contact your local building code office. There are specific building codes for hurricane, flood and fire-prone areas.

I need a Fire door. What fire rating do I need?

Fire door ratings can vary by state, jurisdiction and application. To answer this question, contact your local building code office.

Where can I find R-Values for Therma-Tru doors?

The U-Values of all Therma-Tru doors and glazing can be found on our Performance Data page. Locate the U-Value of your product. Then divide 1 by the U-Value to determine your product’s R-value. (1 ÷ U-Value = R-Value)

What are the building code requirements for water infiltration?

There are no mandatory building code requirements in the U.S. for water infiltration for side hinged doors. The only exception is in Miami Dade and Broward counties in Florida, where water infiltration is required to be 15% of the structural design pressure.

Coastal Area Codes & Wind Zones

I need a door for a 150 mph wind zone. Does Therma-Tru have a system to fit my need?

Yes. However, door systems are rated by design pressure (DP), not wind speed. Your builder, contractor, engineer and / or architect is responsible for and should be able to supply you with the DP ratings required for your door system.

Can I cut my door down in height or put a mail slot into my door and keep the DP structural performance rating in the product approval?

No, modifications may weaken the door’s structural strength.

Can I put a peep site in my door and keep the DP structural performance rating in the product approval?

Yes, a peep site can be added to the door.

I have questions on the U-value, the solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC), and the Sound Transmission Class (STC) of my Therma-Tru Impact-rated glass?

How can I tell if my door and glass are Impact-rated?

Impact-rated glass and HVHZ (High Velocity Hurricane Zone) Impact-rated doors have special labels on them. The Impact-rated glass will have a “LAMI” watermark on the glass. The HVHZ Impact-rated door will have an “Impact” label on the hinge side of the door. (This label should never be removed, painted or stained over.) It is your responsibility to make sure the door system you purchased has the necessary DP rating, product approval or certification to meet your local building code requirements. As always, we recommend that you check with your local building code office for guidance.

Which glass designs are available as Impact-rated glass?

If I use Therma-Tru Impact-rated glass, does that mean my glass will not break when debris hits it?

No. It means the Impact-rated glass unit is made with two panes of glass that will work together. The first pane, which is tempered, will break into small pieces. The second pane, which is laminated, will help prevent debris from penetrating into the home.

Where can I view Florida Statewide Product Approvals for Therma-Tru door systems?

You can view the current Therma-Tru Florida Statewide Approvals on our Product Approvals page. You can also visit the Florida Building Commission website at www.floridabuilding.org and go to the Product Approval page.

Can you give me the Florida product approval I need for my door system?

It is your responsibility, in conjunction with your builder, contractor, engineer and / or architect to contact your local building code office to ensure that the Therma-Tru door you purchased complies with all applicable building codes for your area.

Are the design pressure (DP) ratings listed on your Florida product approvals?

Yes. The DP ratings are listed on the first page of the installation instructions for each of the Florida Statewide Approvals on our Product Approvals page.

Do your fiberglass sidelites meet the Texas Department of Insurance Approval requirements?

What is a Tru-Defense door system?

Our Tru-Defense door system integrates specific Therma-Tru components engineered and tested to deliver outstanding protection in all kinds of weather conditions. What is the Tru-Defense Warranty Rider?

In addition to the lifetime limited warranty on our fiberglass door systems, the Therma-Tru Tru-Defense Door System Rider provides for cash reimbursement that may be used toward secondary damage to flooring and trim, and the labor to make repairs, if water infiltration occurs.  The rider may be found on the Warranties page of our website.

Which door systems are eligible for the Tru-Defense Warranty Rider?

Our Classic-Craft, Fiber-Classic, Smooth-Star or Pulse fiberglass doors are eligible when they include all of the following Therma-Tru-approved components:

  • Therma-Tru Classic-Craft, Fiber-Classic, Smooth Star or Pulse fiberglass door slab (and any applied or inserted panels).
  • Therma-Tru 7-shape corner seal pads for inswing systems only.
  • Therma-Tru composite adjustable profiled inswing sill or Therma-Tru composite profiled outswing sill

○      excludes composite adjustable sills with visible screw cap plugs or Therma-Tru’s basic composite adjustable sill.

  • Therma-Tru dual-bulb door bottom sweep for inswing systems only; no applied door bottom sweep on outswing systems.
  • Frame that meets the dimensional machining requirements of the Tru-Defense frame specifications.
  • Therma-Tru hinges, weatherstrip, glass lites, wood grilles and jamb plugs.
  • Therma-Tru multi-point locking system or approved Therma-Tru double-bored lock and deadbolt system; that is, any ANSI Grade 1 or Grade 2 hardware system.
  • Therma-Tru 7/8” aluminum or stainable astragal on double door systems.
  • Therma-Tru rain guard (required for outswing systems).

Am I required to order the Therma-Tru multi-point locking system (MPLS) to qualify for the Tru-Defense Warranty Rider?

No. However, use of an MPLS will qualify your door system for a higher water infiltration reimbursement warranty limit.

To be reimbursed under the water infiltration reimbursement terms of the Tru-Defense Warranty Rider, does my door system have to have a sill pan?

No. However, use of a sill pan will qualify your door system for a higher water infiltration reimbursement warranty limit.

Do I have to register my door system for the Tru-Defense Warranty Rider?

No, the homeowner is not required to complete a registration and send it in for the Warranty Rider to be valid. However, we recommend that you register your door system so Therma-Tru will have that information on file and be better able to assist you in case you experience an issue in the future. A Warranty Rider registration card will be included in the packet attached to every new Tru-Defense door system. In addition, purchasers of a Tru-Defense door system can register their door purchase on our Warranty Registration page.

Glass

Can I get a Classic-Craft glass design in my Fiber-Classic, Smooth-Star or steel door?

No. The Classic-Craft glass sizes and designs are exclusive to Classic-Craft doors. Because of this, we do not offer Classic-Craft glass in our other door lines such as Fiber-Classic, Smooth-Star or steel.

How do you determine the rating for privacy glass?

The privacy rating is based on point-of-view from the curb, using a 1/2-lite door.

How do I clean the screen vented glass in my door?

In order to clean the glass, the screen must be removed. The steps to remove the screen are as follows: (1) Pull window up to its highest position. (2) Stand on the outside of the door. (3) At the two corner edges of the screen, pinch the screen. (4) Shift the screen to the left or the right. (5) At the opposite corner of the screen, pull the screen toward you with your fingernail, a flat head screw driver or a putty knife. The screen should pull out toward you.

What does flush-glazed mean?

It is a type of door with glass perimeter moldings flush with the face of the door. Flush-glazed glass is built directly into the door during the manufacturing process, eliminating the need for a lite frame. This glass is not removable.

How can I tell if my transom is Therma-Tru glass?

The “Therma-Tru” watermark can be seen in the corner of the glass.

Can I place a tint on the glass in my door?

Any alteration or application of any aftermarket films, coatings, tints or other similar products not originally supplied by Therma-Tru will void the glass limited warranty.

Why is there condensation on the glass in my door?

Condensation, or "sweating", occurs naturally in the home, caused by excessive humidity, or invisible water vapor, in the air. When this harmless water vapor comes in contact with a surface which is at a cooler temperature, such as windows or doorglass, the vapor turns to visible droplets of moisture. The energy-efficient glass units in Therma-Tru door systems are constructed to keep the glass as warm as possible, reducing condensation build-up. However, there is no such thing as a condensation-free window or doorglass in high-humidity conditions.

Multi-Point Lock

What finish options are available for Therma-Tru multi-point locking system (MPLS) handlesets?

We offer the following MPLS handleset finish options:

  • Bright Brass
  • Antique Brass
  • Brushed Nickel
  • Black Nickel
  • Polished Chrome
  • Oil-Rubbed Bronze
  • White is available for narrow handlesets only.

Installation & Maintenance

Can I rekey so all my multi-point locking systems (MPLS) are the same?

Yes. However, we recommend that any rekeying is done by a locksmith. You can order the MPLS keyed alike or rekey the cylinder by following the Rekeying of Cylinders section of the Installation Instructions for MPLS.

Does your multi-point locking system (MPLS) use a 5- or 6-pin cylinder?

Our MPLS uses a 5-pin cylinder. However, your locksmith can rekey the cylinder to a 6-pin using an SC4 blank.

The set screw that goes into the handleset is not flush. What do I need to do to fix it?

Remove the handleset and check to see if the shaft is assembled properly. For proper assembly and positioning of the shaft, watch the Multipoint Lock Install video on our How-To Videos page.

Can the mishandling device and latch on my multi-point locking system be reversed?

Yes. The mishandling device is non-handed. To reverse the mishandling device, remove the sticker and shipping clip, then pull and rotate the mishandling device 180 degrees. For proper assembly, watch the Multipoint Lock Install video located on our How-To Videos  page. 

Can the latch on my multi-point locking system (MPLS) be reversed?

Yes. The latch is non-handed. To reverse the latch, pull and rotate the latch 180 degrees. For proper assembly, watch the Multipoint Lock Install video on our Installation Instructions page.

What can I use to clean my multi-point locking system handleset?

Remove dirt with a damp cloth. Avoid the use of caustic cleansers or chemicals since they will remove the handleset’s protective coating.

Troubleshooting

When I raise my handleset and engage the deadbolt, it does not fully engage and my door is not secure. What should I do?

There are a few issues that could be occurring:

  1. The multi-point mounting screws may be too tight.
  2. There may be debris in the euro groove that is blocking travel of the drive rail.
  3. The deadbolt hole may be too shallow or may be obstructed.

My MPLS key and thumbturn will not turn. What should I do?

Is there any difference between the single- and dual-bulb door bottom sweeps?

Our single-bulb bottom sweep is used with our moderate climate and basic fixed sills. Our dual-bulb bottom sweep is used with our composite adjustable, hardwood adjustable and basic composite adjustable sills.

Does an outswing door need a bottom sweep?

Outswing doors do not require a bottom sweep however, we do offer one. For product availability, contact your local Therma-Tru dealer.  Local dealers can be found on our website.

What are the available finishes for Therma-Tru hinges?

We offer the following hinge finish options: Bright Brass (US3), Antique Brass (US5), Brushed Nickel (US15), Black Nickel (US17A), Antique Nickel (US15A), Polished Chrome (US26), Oil-Rubbed Bronze (US10B), Stainless Steel (US32D) and Zinc Dichromate (US2D). For product availability, contact your local Therma-Tru dealer. (Note: US designations are for general finish color reference only.)

Are your rot-resistant jambs fully composite?

Our rot-resistant jambs are made of primed Pine with rot-resistant Alaskan Yellow Cyprus finger jointed to the bottom of each jamb leg to protect the jamb where it’s most vulnerable to moisture.

Does Therma-Tru offer fiberglass jambs?

No. At this time, we do not offer fiberglass jambs. However, fiberglass options may be available through your local Therma-Tru dealer.
